ACT supporting free bike check campaign run by bike charity Cycling UK

The ACT is backing a nationwide campaign from Cycling UK aimed at helping more people get back on their bikes with free safety checks and simple repairs this summer.
Taking place from 3-5 July 2026, Cycling UK’s new ‘The Big Fix’ weekender will see free bike check events held across the UK, bringing together major retailers, local cycle businesses and community cycling projects.
The campaign is designed to help people keep making affordable everyday journeys during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, with organisers hoping to get as many bikes as possible back on the road over the three-day event.
Cycling UK said the initiative comes as financial pressures continue to shape travel choices, with research carried out by the charity in April showing that 28% of UK drivers are already cycling or walking more to save money, while a further 15% are considering doing the same.
The charity’s YouGov polling also found that walking and cycling ranked higher than other cost-saving measures such as using public transport instead of driving (23%), cutting back elsewhere to afford petrol (19%) or car sharing (9%).
For bikes needing more extensive work, attendees will be offered expert advice and information on where to go for further repairs and servicing.
Cycling UK is also offering a 20% discount on membership during the campaign, giving new members access to bike maintenance guidance, third-party liability insurance, legal advice following incidents and discounts on cycling products and services.
The charity said The Big Fix builds on its existing programmes and partnerships to provide a practical response to rising transport costs, while also encouraging healthier and more active travel.

“A simple repair or safety check can make all the difference, turning an unused bike into a reliable, low-cost way to get around when times are tough. Through The Big Fix, we hope to empower more people to rediscover cycling, not just as a way to save money, but to keep healthy, and stay more active and connected to their community.”
