Rising Fuel Prices Prompt More Drivers to Consider Cycling
Posted on in Cycles News
New research suggesting motorists are increasingly turning to cycling as fuel prices rise highlights a growing opportunity for the cycle industry and independent retailers across the UK.
A survey commissioned by e-bike rental company Lime found that nearly three in ten London drivers are already cycling more or seriously considering switching more journeys from car to bike as petrol and diesel prices continue to increase.
With fuel costs rising sharply in recent months, many consumers are reassessing how they travel for shorter, everyday journeys, where cycling and e-bikes can provide a practical and cost-effective alternative.
For local bike shops, this shift presents an important opportunity to support new and returning riders with expert guidance, servicing, maintenance, safety equipment and access to quality bikes and e-bikes suited to daily use.
While cycling will not replace every journey, it remains one of the most accessible and economical forms of transport available. Rising fuel prices, alongside wider concerns around household costs, congestion and public transport disruption, continue to encourage more people to rethink their travel habits.
The research also highlighted particularly strong interest among younger adults, with motorists aged 18–34 most likely to increase their use of bikes and e-bikes.
ACT believes independent cycle retailers remain central to supporting this transition by helping consumers choose safe, legal and fit-for-purpose products while providing ongoing aftersales support and professional servicing.
As more people consider cycling for transport, ensuring riders have access to trusted local expertise will be essential in building long-term confidence and encouraging sustainable travel habits.
