Hundreds of independent bike shops around the country got involved with this year’s Local Bike Shop Day, according to organisers, the Association of Cycle Traders.
Hundreds of independent bike shops around the country got involved with this year’s Local Bike Shop Day, according to organisers, the Association of Cycle Traders.
The ACT says shops used the event, sponsored this year by Cytech, the internationally recognised training and accreditation scheme for bicycle technicians, to hold promotions or events in-store across the whole weekend.
Among those taking part were ACT member and Cytech-accredited Pedal Back Cycling in Earl’s Court, West London, who celebrated with discounts on new and refurbished bikes, apparel and accessories; Cadence Cycleworks in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, who offered free bike health checks as well as a £10 discount on any service booked with them on the day, Newcastle’s Recyke Y'Bike, also Cytech-accredited and an ACT member, which ran a charity bake sale with 10% off everything in-store and free bike safety checks.
Others commenting on social media included the York Cycle Campaign who posted “We love Local Bike Shop Day”; Wheely Active in Scarborough who said, “so grateful for days like this and our loyal customers” and who also offered 10% off of all services booked on the day, and e-bike brand Hygge Bikes who said “we are totally up for it – everyone should support our local bike shops!
The success of this year’s event demonstrates how it is increasingly being embraced and used by retailers, says Jonathan Harrison of the ACT:
“The two weeks leading up to Local Bike Shop Day have shown how the event is being embraced by independent retailers as an opportunity to engage with their local cycling communities, both existing customers and potential customers. They have also used social media quite heavily to raise their online profiles both locally and within the industry.”
“The concept of Local Bike Shop Day was to create something with momentum, which bike shops around the country could get onboard with and leverage it for their own commercial advantage – and it’s exciting to see so many doing that this year.”
In addition to the physical promotions and events, ACT estimates that social media content reached more than 100,000 people, with TV presenter and prominent cyclist Jeremy Vine among those expressing support online.
