eBay to restrict UK e-bike sales on its platform in effort to encourage safe usage

eBay is tightening regulations on e-bike and e-bike battery sales in the UK from 31 October, in a change aimed at prioritising consumer safety.

The online marketplace will only be allowing “eligible business sellers” to list the e-bike products, with a spokeswoman for eBay stating that the policy will build on CE audits the company began last year to ensure sellers provide products with valid safety documentation.

The restriction comes amidst growing concerns over e-bike safety, partly due to media coverage linking e-bike usage to accidents and battery fires. In response to this, the ACT has launched a new initiative working to promote accurate and positive representations of e-bikes through its ‘E-Bike Positive’ campaign.

ACT Director Jonathan Harrison explains that the campaign aims to address widespread misunderstandings and reassure the public about the safety and benefits of e-bikes, which offer a sustainable, active form of transportation.

Mr Harrison said: “Most e-bike incidents are not due to certified, original equipment but to unregulated imports. Misinformation around these incidents has fuelled unnecessary caution about e-bikes as a whole.”

The ACT’s campaign seeks to challenge negative perceptions of e-bikes in the media, with a notable recent success coming after an ACT member convinced the BBC to revise an article that had initially mischaracterised an accident as e-bike-related, which was later clarified as a dangerous cycling incident.

Mr Harrison added: “E-bikes are safe, sustainable, and accessible. They reduce congestion, cut emissions, and encourage active lifestyles.”
