Job Description

About Compton Compton Cycles:

We are a long-established independent cycle store based in Catford with strong ties to the community and a fantastic reputation (check out our reviews!). We provide expert sales advice and efficient repair service of all makes and designs of Bicycle. We also do repairs for wheelchairs, pushchairs and whatever else we can fix!

We stock a range of bikes including road, electric, Dutch, kids and folding bikes. We are a Brompton Bicycle Gold dealer.

We cater to all users and styles of urban riding and beyond and pride ourselves on providing a first class, no-nonsense & friendly service to all our customers.

Job requirements

The key objective of the role is to ensure that all customers receive a high level of service, including greeting all customers on entering the shop, assisting in their choice of purchases, processing sales through the till system whilst ensuring accuracy at all times. To provide online customers with the same high level of service.

You’d be expected to:

  • Be the face and point of contact for customers across a variety of platforms, including in-store, online and over the phone.
  • Greet all customers entering the store and strive to assist in their choice of purchase, as well as assisting those who wish you book a service or repair with our workshop, using our booking-in system for which training will be provided.
  • Process both cash and card payments through the EPOS system and have cashing-up responsibilities at the end of day.
  • Notify the store bike mechanics of pending services/repairs and contact the customers as necessary regarding any changes to their service/repair including additional costs or time required to complete the job.
  • Assist the store manager by ensuring stock is neatly presented and available for customers to browse and assist with stock takes when requested.
  • Be receptive to training to develop product knowledge and processes to help understand customer needs, store-recommended products and our health and safety minimum requirements to leave customers with the best possible outcome.

Skills/Experience Required

About you:

  • We are looking for someone with excellent customer service skills and a helpful can-do attitude. Previous experience in a retail setting ideal, along with an interest in bicycles and bicycle accessories to help best assist customers. Skills and knowledge can be trained if you’re willing to learn.
  • You have strong people-skills that will enable you to upsell products as well as communicate well with the existing team, which includes 2 highly skilled bicycle mechanics.
  • We are a specialist retailer looking for someone to commit to the role so they can be developed from a sales assistant to a management role. You need to be willing to learn and help with the overall growth of the business in order to facilitate this progression.
  • You need to be willing to deal with a wide variety of customers and try to identify their needs. This ranges from beginner cyclists with little to no prior knowledge about bikes, children, more experienced cyclists, wheelchair users and beyond.
  • You should have basic IT skills and be computer literate. Ideal experience with an EPOS system, but with computer skills this can be easily learned. Should be proficient at using email and navigating websites at minimum.

Benefits, Salary & Hours of Work:

  • We are offering a competitive salary dependent on experience, or national minimum wage for those who are right for the job but bring limited experience in the industry. There will also be staff-discounts within the store and with suppliers.
  • The role will be full-time, with a 5-day working week on an agreed shift pattern, including regular Saturdays.
  • 28 days paid holiday a year pro-rata (including bank holidays).
  • You will be enrolled onto a company pension scheme.
  • You must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Looking to start the role ASAP.

How to Apply:

Please sent a relevant and up-to-date CV along with a short letter as to why you’d be great for the role to info@comptoncycles.co.uk for the attention of Jim.

Try to tell us about you as a person, as well as any relevant experience you have for the role. We have a small team so it’s important that you fit in. A few questions to consider that may help prompt the information we are looking for:

  1. What are your likes and interests? Tell us about yourself!
  2. What experience do you have in sales and customer service? If none - what do you think good customer service looks like? Tell us of a time you’ve helped someone.
  3. What interest or experience do you have when it comes to bicycles? It can be none-at-all, or you may like riding, repairing etc or just doing tricks!

If we like your application, we will invite you in for an interview and further stages may include paid trial shifts. Please make sure to include a contact number with your application as this is the best way for us to get in touch.
