Job Description
Co-Collaborator- Mechanic Role (& Digital Option)
Background
We are looking for someone to assist on the day-to-day mechanics & some digital elements of a still relatively new and unique cycling social enterprise that has a total focus on servicing & repair; as well as trying to deliver, via hire, innovative solutions to the last remaining resistant demographics in the community, to fully enable their participation and enjoyment of cycling, on their terms. We are a not-for-profit, with a greater goal in mind at all times.
We focus on keeping our customer's bikes in safe and efficient working order through servicing; as well as, trying to inspire wider cycling usage, from those who wouldn't ordinarily consider themselves cyclists, via community/ accessible hire for those without bikes. We are an entirely traditional/ community bike-shop focussed enterprise with a total focus on serving local residents for any of their needs.
Based in north London we will use cycling as a tool to tackle social and environmental challenges that are often commonplace across suburban London. In a local landscape dominated by motorised vehicles we want to help make one last push to reclaim public realm for residents and the future health of all.
We will leave no one behind in our push for greater cycling accessibility to address the inequalities being experienced by those most likely to be left behind, with a focus on wellbeing outcomes for all. We also have both social and environmental objectives woven into the core fabric all our activity.
The role
This is dual role to be based predominantly at our hub site in Enfield, north London.
You will be required to undertake ordinary mechanic duties to become fully competent in all areas of the business and generally ensure visiting customers get the best experience possible. You will also be tasked with updating some digital channels and general stock updates.
The role will work independently alongside some other volunteers, and will have the opportunity to expand the brief according to any growth enjoyed for the new business.
We need someone who is passionate about delivering a cycling community-interest company, for the good of the wider local community and its residents. Applications will be encouraged from those with strong mechanic; fixing & environmental passions.
Ultimately we want to establish a network of club service centres embedded in local communities to serve as many ordinary residents of London's suburbs as possible to kickstart their cycling transition journeys. This is the ambition.
Basic & More Advanced Mechanic Duties will be ordinarily required to include (in order of likely magnitude):
· Service and repair customers’ bikes.
· Service and repair community asset bikes (limited hire)
· Build and check new bikes ready for customers.
· Refurbish traded-in bikes for inclusion in fleet/ sale.
· Maintain a clean, safe and tidy workshop.
. Liaise with partners as required before, during and after servicing.
. Create and maintain written records of work undertaken and carried out to ensure safety audit trail
Basic & More Advanced Digital Duties will be be entirely optional, but if of interest/ where experience exists these might include (in order of likely magnitude):
· Social Media Platform Content & Engagement Build
· Local Community Group Outreach- (Both Online & Offline)
· Regular photo & video content creation
- Website Content Build & Maintenance (Either indepedently or in collaboration with 3rd party)
Skills/Experience Required
As a co-collaborator, your ideas will be valued equally to others. Once embedded this will be an independent role, with sole responsibility for various tasks given routinely and autonomy in delivery granted frequently.
You must be comfortable working independently and used to working in small teams in a startup organisation that is at its very infancy. Whilst encouraging independence we also whole heartedly believe in the power of the team and that the whole is of far more value than the sum of parts.
The initial split of the role will ultimately be tailored to best suit the skillset of successful candidate.
At different times training will be interspersed with hands on experience to ensure skillsets are constantly expanding & that as much momentum is being delivered to the project as possible
The successful candidate will have (highly desireable) :
· Previous experience as a bicycle mechanic (essential), with Cytec qualification preferred- although further training can be provided for the right candidate.
· Some previous experience in digital capacity (optional; either as part or whole of their previous role, or via demonstrated personal/ voluntary usage)
· Ideally previous experience within a social enterprise/ thrid sector organisation; or startup company experience.
. Willingness and initiative to contribute to strategy and more generally to identify any work that needs doing in any part of the enterprise, and to carry this out as part of the team.
Personal Qualities
. A good command of spoken and written English, with the ability and personality to advise and sell to our wide variety of customers.
. Overall, the desire to be part of a long term project that makes a difference to a community and to take greater responsibility as we grow.
. Good team player who is looking forward to working with a team members and sharing successes and failures together as one.
. A passion for fixing things and startups
To apply please enclose a CV together with a short covering note outlining why you believe you would be a good fir for the role requirements and the ethos of our enterprise (max 500 words).
