Birmingham council seizes and disposes of illegally upgraded e-bikes exceeding maximum speed levels

Sixteen illegally upgraded e-bikes capable of speeds up to 40mph have been seized and disposed of in a joint enforcement operation in Birmingham city centre.
Under UK law, e-bikes are only legal if their motors assist up to 15.5mph; beyond that, they are classed as motor vehicles requiring registration, insurance and a valid licence.
The crackdown was carried out in partnership with West Midlands Police, British Transport Police, and other agencies, involving both uniformed and plain-clothes officers.
Police forces across the country, including in Suffolk and Norfolk, have also been aiming to ensure the issue of illegally modified e-bikes is tackled.
Jonathan Harrison, Director of the Association of Cycle Traders (ACT), said: “The fact that both the recent MP report and the MP call for action have highlighted this issue underlines just how vital it is that the e-bike market remains regulated, with high-quality, compliant equipment.
“Consumer trust depends on upholding legal standards for e-bikes sold and used in the UK.”
