One million e-bikes sold in 2018 in Germany

Posted on in Business News , Cycles News

electric bikes E-bikes are advancing the German bicycle industry, with 2018 e-bike sales up by 36% from 2017.

More than 980,000 e-bike units were sold last year and today one in every four bikes sold is an electric one.

In Germany, e-bikes hold a market share of 23.5% however, the Zweirad-Industrie-Verband (ZIV) predicts that this market share value will increase to 30% in the medium term and 35% in the longer term.

The export volume of e-bikes from Germany has also increased by 51% to 440,000 units in 2018. This substantial increase is down to a number of factors including the fully integrated batteries and drives, the innovation of the product, appealing designs and the use of high quality materials.

The e-bike market is expanding rapidly across Europe with another added bonus, regular bicycle sales are increasing as well. In Germany, the total market value of regular bicycles and e-bikes combined increased by 16.3%. E-bike and regular bike sales increased 8.6% in volume to 4.18 million units with the number of regular bikes sold increasing by 2%.

E-bikes sales rose from 5% in 2015 to 12% in 2016 with Halfords dubbing 2017 the ‘year of the e-bike' after a 220% sales increase.

The UK may be slightly behind the e-bike growth in Europe but the UK hasn't seen the full potential of e-bikes yet.
