Government in danger of missing targets

Posted on in Business News , Cycles News

Bike Biz has just reported that the government is in danger of missing the target they set to increase levels of cycling and walking across the UK unless there is an increase in the funding.
Cycling UK, Sustrans and Living Streets have urged the Government to increase the investment to address the public health crisis.

The Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS) published in 2016 outlined a proposal to double the number of cycling trips by 2025. However, a safety review document published in November 2018 admitted that the current policy would only see a slight increase over the next six years.

With the government only spending 2% of transport spending on cycling and walking, their vision for 2025 will not be met. Cycling UK, Sustrans and Living Streets have all said that a 5% increase needs to be seen by 2020 and a 10% increase to spending by 2024.

Cycling UK and Living Streets, supported by Sustrans, are now running a joint campaign to urge the Government to allocate more resources and funding to the authorities to encourage cycling and walking.
