New 'Cycles for Children' appeal aims to keep more young riders cycling

The Bikeability Trust has launched Cycles for Children, a new national fundraising appeal designed to help children continue cycling after completing their Bikeability training.
The appeal comes in response to a significant challenge facing many young riders. Research shows that one in four children aged 5 to 10 in the UK do not have access to a cycle at home, meaning many are unable to build on the confidence and skills they gain through Bikeability once their training ends.
Through a voucher scheme, donations will help families access a cycle, helmet, lights and lock from participating shops, ensuring children receive the right equipment while supporting independent cycle retailers.
Supporting local cycle shops
The initiative has been designed to benefit both children and the cycle industry. Rather than supplying standard bikes directly, eligible families receive vouchers that can be redeemed through participating local cycle shops, where they can choose the right cycle and equipment with expert advice.
This approach helps ensure children receive bikes that fit correctly and are safe to ride, while encouraging families to build relationships with their local retailer.
How donations make a difference
Every contribution helps another child continue their cycling journey:
- £15 could contribute towards a helmet.
- £50 could help provide lights and a lock.
- £100 could contribute towards a child's own cycle.
- £200 could help provide a complete cycle package, including a bike, helmet, lights and lock.
