Illegal bike products listed on Chinese retail giant seized in $1.6 million bust against counterfieters

A $1.6 million anti-counterfeiting bust has seen illegal bicycle products seized after an investigation targeting listings on AliExpress, a Chinese retail giant whose website is accessible to customers in the UK.
Chinese law enforcement worked with AliExpress and cycling brand Specialized to shut down two counterfeit manufacturing facilities producing fake bicycle frames and components valued at more than $1 million.
The investigation began after Specialized raised concerns with AliExpress about the quality of bikes and parts sold on the platform, prompting the retailer to share intelligence that allowed authorities to trace the supply chain back to the manufacturers.
Among the goods seized were $1.1 million worth of counterfeit Specialized Tarmac SL8 road frames, 9,500 sticker sets, seatposts, forks, and Roval handlebars and wheels, alongside fake products branded as Pinarello, Cannondale, Cervelo and Trek.
“Counterfeit products imitating Specialized's high-performance goods not only infringe on intellectual property rights but also pose serious risks to consumer safety,” AliExpress said in a statement. “These fake items often bypass stringent quality and safety standards, potentially endangering users and undermining consumer trust in legitimate products; Specialized has tested these counterfeit cycling helmets and frames, and they fail safety standards, sometimes catastrophically.”
Seven individuals were arrested and prosecuted as part of the March operation, which AliExpress estimates could have prevented more than $1.6 million of counterfeit goods reaching the global market.

Jonathan Harrison, Director of the ACT, said: “Crackdowns like this are vital to protect riders, retailers and the reputation of the cycling industry, as counterfeit bike products can pose real safety risks as well as financial harm. Consumers should always buy reputable brands from reputable retailers, such as those involved in the E-bike Positive campaign, to ensure products meet proper quality and safety standards.”
The E-Bike Positive campaign is a UK-wide initiative, now run jointly by the ACT and the Bicycle Association, that is designed to improve public understanding of e-bikes, highlight their benefits for sustainable transport, and challenge negative perceptions particularly in mainstream media.
