Apprenticeships

Last revised: 23rd May 2022

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of both employers and apprentices and lead to nationally recognised qualifications.

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships benefit everyone involved, particularly in challenging economic times. Employers get engaged and loyal staff, apprentices get valuable on-the-job training and customers get professionally maintained bikes. Better yet training costs involved with apprenticeships are heavily subsidised by the Government (if you don't pay into the apprenticeship levy) and there are many other financial incentives available on top of this.

Within the UK cycle industry we have the 18 month Level 2 Bicycle mechanic Apprenticeship Standard (ST0622).

This apprenticeship is delivered by Cytech's training provider Activate Cycle Academy (ACA) and when delivered through ACA apprentices also benefit from gaining Cytech technical qualifiactions on top of the apprenticeship qualification, only possible at ACA.

For further information about the apprenticeship visit the Apprenticeships - UK page on the Cytech website.

Who are they for?

Apprenticeships are for anyone (not just school leavers!) either currently employed by you and needing training and qualifications to increase their skills, or anyone new you're looking to recruit as an apprentice and train up while working for your business.

What is included?

For more information about what is included within the apprenticeship when delivered at ACA visit the Apprenticeships page on their website.

What does it cost?

Training costs involved with apprenticeships are heavily subsidised by the Government (if you don't pay into the apprenticeship levy) - in most cases 95% of the training costs are covered by Government funding, and in some instances this increases to 100% - leaving up to only 5% of the training costs plus the apprentice's salary to be covered by the employer.

Apprentices need to be paid at least either the apprentice national minimum wage or the national minimum wage depending on their age and the year of the apprenticeship they're in.

Activate Cycle Academy (ACA) will be able to guide you through the application process from recruitment through to securing the relevant funding available to you.

Further financial incentives

As well as the training costs being subsidised, employers hiring apprenticeships are also entitled to other incentives to aid in the employment process.

Employers can receive £1,000 for hiring an apprentice:

  • aged 16 to 18 years old
  • under 25 with an education, health and care plan or has been in the care of their local authority

You can find further information for this incentive here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/incentive-payments-for-hiring-a-new-apprentice
